Cultural Studies Term 5
Who coined this term "Intersectionality"?
The term Intersectionality was coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, professor of law and social theorist in her 1989 paper “Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics.”
Now, what does Intersectionality mean?
According to this theory, social identities are overlapping and intersecting and this often affects how we live in the society. In other words, the various identities of one person (such as race, gender, sexuality and class) are not independent of one another, but intersecting. This intersectional identity determines the person's role in the society.
How does Intersectionality affect us?
Often these identities that intersect are related to oppression, domination and discrimination experienced by the individuals who possess these identities. For example, a black woman is doubly marginalized on account of her intersectional identity of race and gender.
The theory of intersectionality has profound implications in sociology, psychology, gender studies.
